Steven Patrick Morrissey has often been considered the originator of emo for his insightful and expressive lyrics. After his band, the Smiths "broke up in 1987, Morrissey began a successful solo career, racking up ten Top 10 singles in the UK." While many of his songs contain controversial topics, his alternative rock style is groundbreaking and has led the music industry to regard him as "one of the most influential figures in alternative rock".
